It has become even more important that you use extra caution when making purchases with your debit/credit card. Here are some tips to protect yourself against debit/credit card fraud, skimming, and e-mail phishing scams.
What is Card Skimming?
Card skimming is the illegal activity of electronically copying the information contained within your debit/credit card. This is usually done using special card reading devices which read the data on the magnetic stripe of the card once it is swiped in the card terminal. Once your PIN and other identifiable card data are retrieved, the information is used to produce a duplication of your card for the criminal to withdraw funds or purchase items using the money in your account.
Stay Alert for E-mail Phishing Scams:
- Unlike phishing e-mails, we will never ask you to verify personal information in response to an email.
- Most fake communications convey a sense of urgency by threatening discontinued service.
- Many fraudulent e-mails contain misspellings, incorrect grammer, and poor punctuation.
- Links within the fake e-mail may appear valid, but deliver you to a fraudulent site.
- The address from which the e-mail was sent is often not one from the company it claims to be.
How Can I Stay Protected?
- Never disclose your PIN to anyone. It is a number that only you should know and it should always remain confidential.
- When making purchases with your card, always be sure to cover the PIN-pad when entering your number so that others around you cannot see. The best way to do this is to tuck the device close to your body and use one hand to cover the keypad.
- Always keep your card within your sight and if possible request to swipe the card yourself during transactions. If a merchant asks you to swipe the card more than once, ensure that any previous transactions have been voided before proceeding.
- It is good practice and recommended that you always obtain copies of any transaction receipts, as well as check your statements on a regular basis to ensure there is no unauthorized transactions occurring.
